Does the type of piano on which you play majorly affect your playing ease?

I try so hard to develop my technique since I have a very heavy feeling and sounding piano. But when I play on steinway grands at competitions or whatever, it's so effortless to play! Let's be honost, is this part of the reason professionals sound so amazing (yes i know that they practice at least 12 hours a day also haha)?
