Homestuck fans, some questions for you?

Er, so, I've seen tons of people majorly obsessing over this Homestuck thing, but I don't quite "get" it. Honestly, it took me a while to even understand what it was, and then once I figured out it's some kind of animated webcomic, I haven't really found anything about the actual plot. Except, of course, that everyone talks about how "awesome" it is. So, Homestuck fans... what's so great about this series? I'm a fan of other comics and manga (but I've never gotten hooked on a webcomic before), so I've wondered about if I'd like this series or not. I am just wondering if it's overrated or if there's something about it that's actually worthwhile. Plus, a lot of people say it "takes a while to get good"... how long do I have to wait, exactly? Anyway, I just wanted to hear what fans have to say about this series... thanks!
